Cost is perhaps the most common, and controversial, topic when discussing course materials. Students and families often feel that prices are too high, but schools are put in a tough position because lowering costs isn’t quite as easy as some might think. Regardless, students and families are always looking for ways to save themselves money – whether it’s on the price of books or on what it costs to have them delivered – and your school may very well be the first place they turn to in order get the help they want.

Fortunately, there are options at your disposal. Formats like used, rental and digital come with significant costs savings. But even with these formats available, you may still get comments from faculty, students and/or families urging you to find more ways to reduce the costs of course materials.

If you, as a person involved in course material procurement for your school, want to address these concerns, and impress your boss(es) in the process, you need to take a look at MBS Direct’s Student Savings Initiative (SSI). Through this program, we work with schools to come up with custom, personal ways to reallocate revenue in order to reduce prices. SSI can help you find answers to questions from students, families and administrators, such as:

  • What is our school doing to make sure students and families are getting the best deal on their course materials?
  • Students and families are concerned about the costs of their books. What can we do to help?
  • What can we do to lower shipping costs?

Created in 2014, SSI is the ultimate way to pass savings, in all areas, on to your students. By joining SSI, we will work with your school to create custom solutions to reduce prices. SSI is an easy way to show your students and families that you have their best interest at heart, and a great way to show administrators that there are ways to reduce costs without making drastic changes.

As it stands right now, the SSI program is used by 70 schools across the country. Those schools joined SSI for a variety of reasons. Whether it was decreasing costs, making education more affordable, not letting course material costs distract from a positive educational experience, or any other motivation, the feedback from these schools has been overwhelmingly positive.

Schools that join SSI also have the option to receive free marketing materials that will help spread the word on whatever method you choose for reallocating your revenue. MBS Direct can provide you with badges to place on your website, personalized emails to send to students and families, social media messages and more.

If you’re not quite ready to make a great impression on your boss by bringing up SSI, contact your account manager to get some more information. Then afterwards, visit their office and show them why SSI is the best choice for both your school and your students and families.
